My digital video camera creates video in MPG4 format. I can upload videos easily to Youtube but couldn't e-mail or edit them. How to work with MPG4 files?

Don't know if this will help, but I download videos from the internet using the Vixy converter. You can do this online through the website, or you can download a converter program for windows (not sure about Macs, but they were working on it).
So you could probably upload to youtube and download in a different format:
AVI, MOV, MP4, 3GP or just the sound.
