Creating a 'professional' e-mail address?

This year marks the start of my college searching. My guidance counselor told me she would like me to get an e-mail address that is a little more professional for communication with colleges. Right now I have a gmail account, which I'm happy with. I set it up so that I can use it on my Windows Mail account (IMAP) and receive mail through there. I was going to create another gmail account and do the same thing, because I'm not ready to transition completely right now.

Alas, the gmail username I would've liked isn't available. (For reference say my name was jane doe) I tried jdoe, but that was taken already. I was going to try j.doe, or janedoe, but I don't know how that looks (my name is quite lengthy for the latter). Would adding a number at the end be unprofessional? (i.e. jdoe2), I'm assuming it is. Any guidance would be great. Thanks!

I think numbers are so unprofessional as well as using yahoo and hotmail accounts. I would personally get a domain name like jane@janedoe.com, there are great rates at http://godaddy.com for domains and email.

yeah i think that numbers after is unprofessional. most internet provides allow you to create an email adress of your choosing so i would look into that.
Seek for hosting company, buy domain, some hosting plan (you do not need to create any web) and set up your dreamed email address.
