Do you have a MSN account? Or Windows Live Messanger account? Those are both things that would cause that message. Check all your microsoft accounts for mail and that should take care of the problem.

if aol is your default email client, then all those emails you are saving or have not read yet, will appear on the windows welcome logon screen

xrsn
its ur msn/live msgr which has checked up ur hotmail the last time u were on the net. and that displays the msgs u haven't read in ur hotmail inbox
it usually says that when you haven't read them. Or maybe you deleted them and there still being listed as not read. In any case delete your trash also.
Did you configure outlook to download mails or mail headers? That is one possibility.

The other could be logging on to Hotmail, and not reading the mails. That can also lead to "Unread mail messages" message next to user name before you login.

it shows that when u have unread mails from ur msn/hotmail/live account and u have the option "log into my msn/hotmail automatically on windows log on" checked. It has nuthing to do with Aol, unless installation of aol has some option to log into msn automatically upon windows logon.
This can be due to the there are unread emails either in Micrcosft Outlook or in Microsft Outlook express...
when you login to your hotmaill account, if there are still messages that are not read yet... you will have that alert next to your username
